It's the pinstripes

I am not a "sports" person, I have never been a "sports" person. That was always my sister Melissa's territory. I played my 12 years of soccer (sometimes grumpily), put in a short stint at tennis, swimming, cross country and golf... but I certainly never took an interest in following professional sports. And I barely tolerated with good humor the protracted dinner-table discussions about water-polo and softball. I am a book person, and I have always been a book person.

And so one of the more suprising, even shocking, developments to arise out of my time in New York is my new-found passion for the Yankees. Now let's not get carried away here, notice I did not say baseball, I said the Yankees. I don't follow any other teams (unless they are playing the Red Sox), but when I got to the city and took one look at those pinstripes it was love.

And can I just say? There is NOTHING so fun as taking off work on a week-day to go to a game, eat hot dogs and cheer for the best team in all of sports.

Hall of Legends...
The new stadium is beautiful...

Thank goodness my favorite Yankees fan has lots of extra vacation days saved up!

Curses

The Yankees swept the Red Sox in a four game series this weekend. This occured shortly after it was revealed that several players from the Red Sox World Series team were ommitted from the drug testing list.

Coincidence? No. The curse is back my friends. Bwa ha ha.

Kheaven got to go to the game on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. I'm so jealous I'm considering not speaking to him for a week... Except that I want to hear all about it.

Subway Series

The Empire State Building is lit up every night with random colors. However, during the Subway Series (when the Mets play the Yankees) the tower is lit up with the colors of the winning team...

Blue and white. Go Yankees!

"I cheer for two teams...

...The Yankees and whoever beats the Red Sox. "

I saw that quote on a shirt at the stadium. Loved it.

Having chosen my side of the hometown rivalry last year (Who cheers for the Mets??), I was fully prepared this season to engage in the senseless frenzy that it means to be a die-hard Yankees fan.

With my new Johnny Damon jersey in hand (Thank you sister), I was eager to get out to the new Yankee Stadium and show off my pin-stripes.

#18, Johnny Damon!

When Niels saw my Yankees jersey, he decided he needed one too...

The new stadium doesn't have quite the nostalgia of the old stadium, but it ain't bad...

So technically, the Yankees lost this game to Tampa Bay, but Tampa Bay did win the World Series last year, so I was willing to cut our boys some slack.

I Got Off The Island

Pardon the cheesy "Lost" reference, but I couldn't resist.

Today, I played tourist one last time and took a three hour Circle Line boat tour around Manhattan island. It was fun to see my city from the water, plus it yielded some fantastic pictures.

First, one to prove that I'm really here:

Skyline...

Ellis Island...

Lady Liberty...

Brooklyn Bridge...

Yankee Stadium...

Also today, I installed my air conditioner... Did you get that? INSTALLED... as in, with actual tools and heavy lifting, all by myself.. my air conditioner. I feel very handy and somewhat proud of myself. I am also very happy because this means that I will no longer be subjected to the whims of New York's very temperamental weather.
I was so excited, that I almost took a picture of the air conditioner in its fully-installed state to post on the blog. But then I really would be one of those weird crazy bloggers who thinks that their audience (if they have one) actually cares about their air conditioner, and having already spent to paragraphs on it, I draw the line at pictures.
